The Fundamentals: Pudovkin's Building Blocks

Birth Of Modern Filmmaking Through Vsevolod Pudovkin

Picture
Vsevolod Pudovkin
Los Angeles --  We have examined thus far primarily the concept of editing via the hyper frenetic staccato styling of Abel Gance and the metaphorical rhythmic beats of Eisenstein.  As we all know these type of movies maybe viewed as groundbreaking  but they hardly make a dent on the profit margin.

Enter Vsevolod Pudovkin.  Don't try pronouncing his name just refer to him as Pudovkin.  This is the man, no he didn't lay the golden egg, but what he did do is develop film theories that bridged the experimental with the practical.  As you will see in the next clip.  No doubt his theories would later form the foundational fundamentals of the classic Hollywood film that remains in use even today, nearly a century later.  Talk about durability.

“The foundation of film art is editing.”

Pudovkin’s 5 editing techniques are: contrast, parallelism, symbolism, simultaneity, and leit motif.

These are the very same techniques used today in practically every film that is a cut above the rest.  It separates the men from the boys. The Amateur from the Professional.  It is really waht makes editing not just assembling a sequence of shots to create continuity but rather insert, juxtapose, overlay, cut in, cut away and so on to create a virtual sense of reality on a unpredictable sea of human emotion.

Enough said here is Pudovkin's 5 editing techniques that you will need to familiarize yourself with as part of your film making arsenal.  Good luck.

HAPPENING LAGFF CLOSING

PictureRamsey Seikaly
Los Angeles -- The countdown begins today for the closing of the 2014 Los Angeles Greek Film Festival.  The memories, the experiences, the joys and hopes are as of tomorrow become the anticipation toward 2015.

A few personal thoughts  I would like to share.  Festivals such as these regardless of size are the incubator of the talent and skill needed in this very highly competitive industry.  Although the honorees have a plethora of credit and body of work please keep in my it is not what you have done but what you are doing that makes the most impact.

That is not to say we don't pay respect and honor those who have made a very successful career in this highly exposed industry that we call "the movies".  One can learn and one can experience the joy and struggle it took these fine men and woman to reach the status that we all aspire to some day come into our own.

Yet having said this, to come into your own is not to compare nor contrast yourself to and from others,  but to respect and accept with gratitude where you are, and to know this you have come into your own by being in your own.  The accolades come and go but the respect you garner especially to yourself and the appreciation and gratification you accept and respect will always be with you.

So for those of you regardless of your years be it in your youth, middle years or senior years never lose sight of your dream and your full potential.  For events like these are only moments and sweet moments that help us on the road toward our success.  They are part of our affirmation.

Praise those who are being honored.  Praise yourself for honoring them and learn from all but especially learn from yourself.  The doors are wide open.  They never close.  It is us who determine and decide whether to enter or exit.

Hope to see you tonight and the closing ceremony of the LAGFF in the courtyard of the Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Boulevard, where else but in HOLLYWOOD!

[TRAILER]

George leaps into his car and drives away. He can’t handle proposing to his girlfriend. Strange to say, he comes across a bride who has just escaped from her wedding. Twist of Fate, isn’t it? Love, marriage and commitment are at stake as never before in this romantic comedy on the roads of Cyprus.

I hope this film makes people laugh, think and feel. – Stelana Kliris

Stelana Kliris is a South African Cypriot writer and director. She has written and directed two documentaries and two short films. “Committed” is her first feature film.

Michael Douglas Jane Fonda
PictureRamsey Seikaly
Los Angeles -- Jane Fonda the controversial Actress whose Vietnam era anti-war activities garnered the anger of veterans and critics alike was honored not for her conscience objection to that war nor her photo ops in the infamous Hanoi visit at the height of that Indo-China conflict but rather for her trailblazing body of films and generally outstanding performances at the 42nd Annual Life Achievement Award.
In an evening filled with surprise and sentiment, many of film and television's most revered artists, executives and philanthropists from across the nation turned out to pay tribute to one of America's most revered artists. The June 5 black tie gala was taped at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, CA and will premiere on Saturday, June 14 at 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on TNT and encore Friday, August 1 on TCM as part of an all-night tribute to Fonda.
