![]() Los Angeles -- Before you say, "Say what?" read this. MIT, the original Geek U (Not GQ) LOL [Laugh On Line] along with Harvard, Yale, Princeton and the other ivy league elite class for those who are scholastically over achievers, has joined the distance learning wagon, opening its once coveted sequestered doors to average Joe's like me. Economics aside staying true to their altruistic belief that education should not be the purview of the wealthy and well endowed, even though they sit on a gold mine of endowment monies that surpass the GNP of most nations. Have opened not their admissions standards, still the highest of the highs by all accounts, but a number of undergrad and grad courses to the general public, in a non-credit status, for free. Which brings me to, you got it, MIT's free online film school under their Open Course Ware Initiative http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm and its Comparative Media Studies aka Film School http://cms.mit.edu. According to MIT the goal of the Comparative Media Studio is I quote you, "To prepare students for jobs that don’t yet exist. We consult regularly with leaders in industry, the arts, public policy, journalism, education, and the nonprofit sector, trying to understand contemporary developments, identify job and internship opportunities, and pinpoint skills and knowledge which will help prepare our students for new opportunities." So check it out. What you got to lose? Nothing since it costs nothing other than time and the benefits out weigh the liability. No testing, no grades, yes no degree but it will give you a sound foundation that can eventually lead to if you so desire entrance into a degree program. And best of all bragging rights that you are MIT/Harvard trained just like the laser eye surgeons who shamelessly flaunt their ivy league credentials in their ongoing quest to turn a dollar into a hundred. ###
